it's a great piece of fiction that details and a futuristic universe full of political rivalries mystical intrigue economic domination technological innovations and of course interplanetary power struggles Herbert created a whole universe out of not just one novel at six he wrote the sequels to the original novel which includes Dune Messiah Children of Dune god emperor of dune heretics of doom and chapter house 

dune even Frank Herbert's son Brian Herbert co-wrote prequels and new sequel novels to his father's originals collaborating with co-author Kevin J Anderson the franchise even spawned board games and computer games and of course other types of merchandise needless to say 

this dune thing is a big big deal indeed since it's that big of a deal on the fiction world, of course, the film and TV world would try to get in on the picture in 1984 acclaimed director David Lynch tried to adapt the first book into a movie but it turned out to be a big dud while it developed a cult following later on since after all, David Lynch is the kind of director whose works really developed called followings his dune version bombed at the box office 

when it first came out because of the difficulty of the material to be translated into an audio-visual medium even sci-fi channel attempted to create a TV series out of it in the 2000s and called it Frank Herbert's dune that one was more successful in the attempt in Lynch's eighties movie and 

it became one of the highest-rated series for the channel in the late 2010's there has been renewed interest in bringing this material to life once more sci-fi fans couldn't be happier to discover that French Canadian director Denis Villeneuve would be at the helm of this new production with such a claim sci-fi film under his belt namely the Academy award-nominated arrival and the highly anticipated Blade Runner 2049 here is a person who would know what to do with the material that's very rich and intricate so what do we know so far

No. 1# what's the story with six do novels and various prequels and sequels and such is it any wonder that there also exists a dune encyclopedia every bit of detail included in this universe now that's a lot of details in there so which of those details would end up in the film and interviews director Dennis said that he wants to focus on bringing the first book to life since it's such a very detailed story he negotiated with his producers that the  book should have a two-movie adaptation and it will this first adaptation was already finished and it focused on the main meet of the book story 

dune is basically about a young teen protagonist named Paul Atreides whose heir to the throne of his father Duke Leto of the House Atreides he's an aristocrat being trained to take over the house so he is being schooled in various ways to prepare him for the leadership he's unique sense aside from his nobility Paul also has a mother who's a member of the bench SRF a big political and spiritual force which is like a superhuman sisterhood of sorts so they have some sort of mystical powers so of course Paul's mother lady Jessica also trained Paul to enhance his own powers and stuff see with that premise alone 

there's already a lot of interesting tidbits to unpack so it's no wonder that director Dennis wanted to split the first book into to add to that the meteor plot of the film and people would really be totally hooked and that plot is about having to take over the leadership of a planet named Arrakis which is a desert-like place this is the place that they call dune because you know sand dunes Frank Herbert's dune universe there is one precious commodity that could only be harvested on this planet and that commodity is called the spice which in the book they call melange the spice is very important in this universe that's why it's coveted like the goal

No. 2# how will denis Villeneuve reinterpreted knowing how the David Lynch film would be brought up for comparison to his upcoming film director Dennis says that he respects how Lynch made his version but he will be reinterpreting it from scratch meaning he will go back to how the book fired up his imagination and that's what he used to create his vision for the film since this is also a kind of intergalactic power play with various twists and turns involving different planets species and other stuff like that it would indeed be compared to another space saga that just concluded on film 

the Star Wars saga well this will not come as a surprise since George Lucas said that Frank Herbert's dune highly influenced the creation of his own space saga so there you go that's why director Dennis also said that he wants to make his version of the dune as a kind of Star Wars for adults so Wow let's see how that will come out while denis villeneuve will take care of the directing part he also trusted stellar scriptwriters to adapt the movie to life and the movies in good hands because he co-wrote it with John Speights and Eric Roth with Roth's credits you know that the man knows how to adapt a work of fiction into a cinematic screenplay since

No. 3# who will star in it with the project as big as dune it's no surprise to see that it has attracted Hollywood a-listers to star in the project so let's have a rundown him who's going to appear here Hollywood's latest Academy Award-nominated darling Timothy shall Ahmet will be the protagonist of the film as he plays Paul Atreides the teen heir who's preparing himself for leadership as their house would be taking over the control of the precious planet Arrakis in the eighties film this character was played by Kyle MacLachlan who made his debut in Hollywood with that role popular singer-actress zendaya will play the role of Johnny the love interest of Shalem it's Paul character Johnny is part of the Freeman 

the indigenous native people who inhabit the precious planet Arrakis so of course with Paul's family taking over the spice production business here he is bound to run into the natives of the land and the 80s film Shaun young portrayed this character and yes they really have glowing blue eyes star wars veteran Oscar Isaac will play another intergalactic character

 here as Duke Leto Atreides the father of Paul the protagonist his character knows that there's an attempt at his life when they start taking over the planet Arrakis so he's prepping a son for that eventualities as well Mission Impossible actress Rebecca Ferguson will play lady Jessica the wife of Duke Leto and the mystical mother of protagonist Paul it would be interesting to see 

how she will portray this intriguing character that treads the line of mysticism and political power intersected with motherhood to boot Aquaman star Jason Momoa will play Duncan Idaho who serves the house of tradies as their swordmaster and the Dukes right-hand person who will have to negotiate with the indigenous natives of the planet Arrakis he's a clean-shaven looker of a character that's why Jason had to shave off his beard to portray this role as close to the book's description as possible the MCU is most hated villain Thanos will not appear here 

but the man who played him well Josh Brolin he will play the role of gurney Halleck one of the Dukes trusted persons who also trains the heir to the throne with some fighting skills here's some interesting trivia in the 80's film adaptation of dune Star Trek's Patrick Stewart played this character so let's see how Josh would approach this character now one of the strangest characters in dune would be played by stellan skarsgård as he dons the role of Baron Harkonnen he's that floating guy from the house Harkonnen the recognized enemy of the house to tradies

Wellington you from the last name alone it's clear that this 2020 dune got to casting down paths since in the eighties version the kind of whitewashing ensued when they had actor Dean Stockwell portrayed this character but hey don't get us wrong since we also love Dean and his lovable portrayal of Al into quantum leap it's just that this 80's dune casting was such a misstep of a leap

No. 4# where's the character of sting it's funny but one of the most memorable characters in the 80's dune film is the one portrayed by singer sting who is named Fayed ratha the villainous guy who had a knife duel with our protagonist Paul he's really unforgettable here because he had a forgettable characterization you know what I mean sting appeared so Kitsch and can't be here that he's just so lovable to hate here or maybe just chuckle whenever he appears on screen too bad that the 80s film didn't really flush out his evil character better so we're also wondering if they will have this character appear in the 2020 dune version we haven't seen any casting news about this rule yet so let's just wait until they announce something new and                                                                                                                     

No. 5# there's a TV series spin-off - with material as loaded as dune they also thought of producing a TV series connected to the new dune films so of course, denis Villeneuve will still be involved in it as he is set to direct the show's pilot and maybe more episodes down the line the working title the TV show is dune the sisterhood you will feature the story of the all-women group Bene Gesserit and will show just how much power this mysterious group wields within the worlds of doom the show story will serve as the prequel story of the 2020 dune movie so there you have it.
