The Father Movie Review

The father is a drama from director Florian Zeller and sony pictures classics the film stars Anthony Hopkins Olivia Coleman Rufus Sewell Imogen poots and Olivia Williams a man refuses all assistance from his daughter as he ages as he tries to make sense of his changing circumstances he begins to doubt his loved ones his own mind and even the fabric of his reality

We're talking about the father and I'm gonna say this straight up for me this is hands down one of the best movies of the year so far I would not be at all surprised if it gets the best picture Oscar nomination should the academy awards actually happen this year but I would be shocked if sir Anthony Hopkins does not get the best actor nomination but we'll get to it Hopkins plays Anthony a man suffering from presumably, dementia and the movie goes out of its way to put  we the audience into his mindset, I don't think I'm spoiling anything here because this is straight up in the trailer,

I'll give you a little wave when I'm done talking about this part cool all right here we go there are moments in this movie where Anthony's family and familiars are played by different actors like they swap one actor for another just to make us feel confused and the first example of this was the first moment where I knew I was in for something really special the film uses similar techniques like replaying scenes in different contexts and settings to throw us off

Welcome back unsurprisingly Hopkins is phenomenal in this movie he gets to go really really deep with it and it's really impressive outside of Hannibal Lecter, this is probably my favourite performance of his I've ever seen granted I have not seen all of his movies and the rest of the cast holds steady with him as well Williams and Sewell are both really good but for me the other two standouts were Olivia Coleman and Imogen poots Imogen boots

I'm really starting to like she's only been on my radar for like a year now Coleman has a number of like really impressive emotional scenes and poots has a couple of sort of quiet reactionary scenes that were just like wow and the movie feels rather operatic and I'm not sure how to articulate what I mean by that I would also love to see this thing live as a play remember when live plays were a thing that was nice it also feels very much like a thriller

It's not it's a straight-up drama but the way it messes with our minds to keep us on edge the whole time was very thriller-like I mentioned how the movie is purposefully confusing and it becomes more so as the movie goes along and Antony sinks deeper into his illness and I thought that was great also this is a movie that's not just about the sick individual but how the illness sort of infects an entire family it's also not a film for passive watching one needs to pay close attention because there are a number of very subtle visual clues and dialogue clues that help to explain what's actually happening in reality

If i had any negatives here it would be that this movie is definitely a slow burn despite its short run time it's only 97 minutes but there are sequences that feel a little bit unnecessarily long still the final scene in this movie is absolutely heart-wrenching and it's a tour de force performance a phrase i don't like using but it really is by anthony hopkins i absolutely recommend the father i think it's an absolutely brilliant film with brilliant performances and i have very little doubt that there will be significant oscar buzz

when the season rolls around now i don't have a proprietary rating system as yet so i'm just trying to figure out what i'm going to give the father and i think i'm going to give the father a fascia is dead that is fascia oh his dad oh his father out of ten stop i want to know are you looking forward to the father what is your favorite anthony hopkins role that isn't hannibal lecter because i got to challenge you a little bit what are your thoughts hit the comments below let's discuss if you enjoyed this review please Share this With Your Friends and Others.
