Chand Raat Today
Chand Raat celebrations are held on the occasion of eid al-Fitr, which is celebrated on 1 Shawwal. The beginning of the Islamic month depends on the first glance of the lunar crescent and thus the month of Ramadan can be 29 or 30 days. The moon is at night on which the first lunar crescent of the month of the shawal is observed. As the right day of eid al-Fitr depends on seeing the moon, the moon is often considered more festive on eid al-Fitr than on eid al-Adha, which is already well known.
Once the new moon is visible, announcements are made from mosques, television channels, and radio stations. The festivals begin almost immediately and continue all night until dawn prayer. The whole family leads to local markets, markets, and shopping malls. Buyers usually buy last-minute items for eid, such as shalwar kameez, bangles, jewelry, bags, and shoes. Gifts and sweets are brought for friends while toys are brought for children.
Barbershops and beauty parlors are also heavily visited in the evening in preparation for the next day. Women and girls decorate their hands with henna at home. People also decorate their houses and start preparing food for a holiday. Luxury lights are installed in the markets as well as in government buildings, banks, and mosques. Moon night also gives people the opportunity to meet with friends and family.
